In various group sizes, students will learn about Canadian Federal government and Whitecap government through the use of video and infographics. Students will be able to use this information to create a PSA (Public Service Announcement) explaining an aspect or role in either the Federal or Whitecap government.
Using visual thinking strategies, students will work in small groups with one of the four traditional Dakota stories. Students will storyboard the traditional story and choose imagery from the Dakota lesson website, other sources, or draw their own to retell the story with the images and people in their group.
In partners, students will examine icons from the Dakota timeline to understand key elements in creating an icon. Students will then examine the whole timeline to understand how a timeline is created. In the end students will create their own icon and explanation that could be added to the wall.
This booklet is the foundational educational resource for the lesson material. It tells of the history and culture of the Dakota and the Whitecap Dakota First Nation. It describes their legacy of alliance with newcomers and Indigenous groups and their role in forming Canada and their contributions to our region today.
