Using historical images from Whitecap Dakota First Nation, students will analyze the images for clues about the identity of the person in the photo. Students will then have an opportunity to use the information provided to them by the teacher, to write a poem about the image.
The teacher will use an interactive visual viewing strategy to guide the class through a PowerPoint presentation (includes a video), which supports students learning to interpret an old photograph and learn about the identity of Chief Whitecap.
Using visual thinking strategies, students will work in small groups with one of the four traditional Dakota stories. Students will storyboard the traditional story and choose imagery from the Dakota lesson website, other sources, or draw their own to retell the story with the images and people in their group.
This booklet is the foundational educational resource for the lesson material. It tells of the history and culture of the Dakota and the Whitecap Dakota First Nation. It describes their legacy of alliance with newcomers and Indigenous groups and their role in forming Canada and their contributions to our region today.
