As a class or in small groups, students will participate in a guided walking tour to discover the history of the Stonebridge community, learning about the relationship the Dakota people and Newcomers had with the land and each other.
In small groups and then as a class, using colourful illustrations on magnets for visual support, students will discuss and learn about the gifts the buffalo gave to the Dakota people and other Plains First Nation people who lived in the area.
As a group, listening to a reading the story Buffalo Dreams at least twice, students will use comprehension strategies to help them understand the importance of the white buffalo calf and be introduced to the White Buffalo Woman.
This booklet is the foundational educational resource for the lesson material. It tells of the history and culture of the Dakota and the Whitecap Dakota First Nation. It describes their legacy of alliance with newcomers and Indigenous groups and their role in forming Canada and their contributions to our region today.
