The teacher will use an interactive visual viewing strategy to guide the class through a powerpoint presentation (includes a video), which supports students learning to interpret an old photograph and learn about the identity of Chief Whitecap.

Lesson Outline

TIME DURATION: Approximately 2 (45 minute) lessons

PRIMARY OUTCOME
The Cues and Conventions section in each grade of the English Language Arts
Saskatchewan Curriculum addresses expectations for sentences for each grade.

ADDITIONAL OUTCOMES
ELA CR3.1, ELA CR4.1, ELA CR5.1: Each of these outcomes addresses identity. This lesson would be a great introduction to thinking about identity.

MOTIVATIONAL SET:

1. The Powerpoint can be used to guide the students through the whole lesson.
2. Using slide 2: Ask students if they have ever looked through a microscope or binoculars to look at certain things really close. Discuss what items students see when that happens (example: details) and what they miss by looking at something when it is really close (Example: background)
3. Using Slide 3: Use the YouTube video of the book Zoom or get the book Zoom By Istvan Banyai. Discuss how the author Zooms out from an image. Key questions to ask:
• What do you notice by being super close to something?
• What do you notice as more of the whole picture is displayed.


MAIN PROCEDURES/STRATEGIES:

Zoom in Technique

  1. Hand out the Viewing a Picture graphic organizer sheet that students can use.
  2. Progress through slides 4-9 on the Powerpoint.
  3. Use either whiteboards or do a student discussion to allow the students to answer the questions that are given in the presenter’s note for each slide.
  4. On the graphic organizer, students will try to figure out the placement of the different sections of the photograph.
  5. After the whole photograph is shown and discussed (if you are a teacher at Chief Whitecap School, take the class down to the front foyer and show them the Chief Whitecap picture), share the teacher information about Chief Whitecap Portrait Information Card.
  6. Find out what students already know about the identity of Chief Whitecap by having them write out what they already know in the bottom portion of their picture graphic organizer.
  7. Using the Chief Whitecap Information Card cut each bullet sentence apart. Give each student one of those sentences. Have them practice reading it. If they did not know that fact about Chief Whitecap they would put it into the learned column in the bottom half of their graphic organizer.
  8. Each student would read their Chief Whitecap fact sentence out loud to the class.
  9. Students would choose 3 new facts to put into their learned column. Teachers will need to instruct students on how to record information on a sheet.  The whole fact card could also be displayed using slide 11 on the powerpoint to support students getting the correct information.

Discuss the word identity and what it means with the class.  Share the poem either on the Powerpoint slide or use the Dakota Poem handout.


CLOSING:

  1. Have students choose key words that would express Chief Whitecap’s identity.
  2. Co-construct criteria with the class about writing a strong sentence. The Strong Sentence Checklist can be filled in as a class so students have the checklist to refer to. Elements that should be included in the constructing of criteria could be:
    • using verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and connecting words
    • sentences having correct subject-verb agreement and capitalizing appropriate words
    • length of sentence between (example: 7-14 words)
  3. Students then will write their own strong sentence at the bottom of their graphic organizer.
  4. Once their sentence is approved, students can then rewrite their sentence in large font on a blank sheet of paper or on a sentence strip.

The Chief Whitecap Picture can be posted on a bulletin board and the sentences describing his identity can be posted around the picture.
